Here Christ simply states 'I am He'. A magnificent self-portrait. But what can this short phrase say to us?

'I am the True Vine'

The 7th and last of the 'I am' statements. This one suffers more than most by being taken out of context. Abiding in Christ is only a limited part of it's meaning. By taking in context with the previous verse is it shown that it is not a call to polish our souls but a call to battle. It is a statement of reassurance for God's people.

The last and the greatest of the signs that Christ performs in the book of John the restoring of someone to life. This was also the action that was the trigger for His own murder. It is also a prophecy of His resurrection to strengthen and develop the faith of His followers.

In ancient times armies were enormous in size. How did the generals keep their armies together?

By using very long poles with fire baskets which could be seen for miles.

The same applies to God as he leads us through the darkness of the world. As lights our way we must make sure we don't follow false lights.

'I am the Bread of Life'

Carl Marx declared that 'religion is the opium of the people'. He saw it as something that cut people off from the real world.

But Marx was wrong. It is the fabric of life that drugs people because people are in essence materialists.

There is a hunger in human beings that is deeper than physical hunger. The hunger of the soul. People think - If I only had this then I would be satisfied but people today have more and are no happier?

What is the solution to this emptiness?
